The Ubiquitous Library for the Print-Disabled - LG Digital Talking Book Library
LG DTB (Digital Talking Book) Library is the world’s first ubiquitous library designed for the print-disabled. In order to provide seamless information services for the target users, it adopted ubiquitous computing technology including RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)/ NFC (Near Field Communication). Thanks to the embedded technology, the handicapped users are able to get access to Digital Talking Book and other useful information services without complicated connection process.
One of the services is providing Digital Talking Book services on the Internet activated by communication between a mobile phone and a computer. When a user places a NFC chip-embedded mobile phone close to a computer, NFC and Bluetooth communication begins between two devices. Through the communication, the computer identifies the user and automatically opens “My Library” Web page for the Digital Talking Book services. The user can navigate LG DTB Library according to voice guidance and enjoy streaming audio services of Digital Talking Book. In addition, the user can download the contents onto a mobile phone.
Next service is developed for mobile phone and wireless Internet users. Users get access to the mobile interface of LG DTB Library with their mobile phones, download Digital Talking Book contents, and enjoy the contents on the mobile phones.
All books are provided in the Digital Talking Book (DTB) form. We adopted the DAISY standard and are developing DAISY standard books with Korean Braille Library . DAISY is the acronym of the Digital Accessible Information SYstem. DAISY includes Extensible Markup Language (XML) and the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) so that the users can navigate through it in a way comparable to how a print book would be used. Users can examine the book by page, section, or chapter, or use a table of contents or an index.
Our DTB collection covers all kinds of subjects: Literature, Arts, Science on the coattails of Korean Braille Library, Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and The Korean Association for Special Education.
The Participants of the Library Project six subsidiary companies of the LG group take part in this project.
The LG Sangnam Library is in charge of project management and contents production.
